Patient of: Kidney Stone
Take care by: MaitriManthan NGO & Pacific Hospital
Nathi Bai, a 60 year old resident of Daroli Bhindar, was suffering in unbearable pain and desperately needed our help. She experienced pain in her lower back, just below the ribs, spreading around to the front of her abdomen and often extending into the groin area. She often felt nauseous and feverish, and there was sometimes blood in her urine. This worried her, and she visited the hospital where it was confirmed that she had Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones). Nathi described her reaction as shocked and speechless.
Kidney stones are solid lumps of crystals which build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney. Almost 95% of cases do not need to undergo surgery and can be treated with prescribed medication and a particular diet. Some kidney stones will usually go away by themselves, causing no painful or discomforting symptoms whatsoever. However, as shown in Nathi’s case, kidney stones can be very pronounced, if they are large or situated in places where they can’t be passed easily.
Nathi needed surgery to remove the kidney stones as soon as possible, but was stunned at the price of surgery. “I was very shocked when all of this happened to me. I had no idea what to do, or how to get the money!”, she worryingly admitted. Indeed, this surgery was far too costly for a woman like Nathi, who came from a small rural village and didn’t even have insurance. It is said that women are special because they can endure extreme pain and stay strong. Nathi was no exception to this. However, her health problem had become so severe that at times she would break down and cry, due to the unbearable pain.
We came to know about her situation and immediately sympathised, wanting to help. It was her case which triggered our campaign for all women. We started raising funds to provide basic medication and treatment for Nathi and many other women suffering from kidney stones and requiring surgery. Thanks to the generosity of local medical hospitals the cost of surgery has been reduced to 2 lakhs.
Please come forward and help women just like Nathi Bai. This story could repeat itself anywhere, even to a lady residing two doors next to you. At MaitriManthan we urge you to support all women, their children and their families who may feel helpless when watching their loved ones in pain. No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. You don’t have to be an angel; you just have to be someone who can give.
